What Is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction is a process of accompanying a person on his or her personal spiritual journey and helping this person grow closer to God.
According to William A Barry and William J. Connelly, in their book The Practice of Spiritual Direction, Spiritual direction is “help given by one Christian to another which enables that person to pay attention to God’s personal communication to him or her, to respond to this personally communicating God, to grow in intimacy with this God, and to live out the consequences of the relationship.”
The director sits with the one who has come for guidance and listens to where God has been in the day to day moments of his or her life. Through this listening and by the director’s questioning and comments, the directee can then begin to see where God has been working in one’s ordinary life.
